The Club were recently honoured by our President, Admiral The Lord Boyce, the Lord Warden of theCinque Ports, who attended to dedicate two newly refurbished chairs in the memory of much loved and respected member, Terry Taylor.

Lord Boyce, with Fiona Covell and Jeremy TaylorThe chairs were originally in the First Class Saloon of the TS Lord Warden - the Cross Channel Ferry of that name - and had originally come to the club when that vessel finished its service with Sealink.  They were unfortunately allowed to get into disrepair and, through the auspices of Terry, were given to Arnside Sailing Club inCumbria.

Following the sad loss of long time member, Terry, long time friend John Murray contacted the RCPYC and suggested that the chairs be refurbished jointly by Terry’s family and our Club.

The happy result was that Fiona and Jeremy (Terry’s daughter and son) with their own families were present at the extremely well attended ceremony to see not only the chairs but a plaque in their Fathers memory be unveiled - and appropriately by the Lord Warden in the Lord Warden room with chairs from the Lord Warden.

And, the letter from John & Maisie Murray

This is to say a sincere " Thank You "  to the Commodore & Club for making the occasion so special . The photo in the Dover Express was very good.

I was a bit overwhelmed by the response to what was basically a slide show designed only for family and friends. My voice has just recovered! It was very nostalgic for Maisie and I to retrace our footsteps with Terry & Jane's family from the late 60's to the mid 70's.

Just for the record the chairs together with all the other " old fashioned " but classic furniture were removed from the " T S Lord Warden" during "renovations " in 1970 and being cherry red in colour always were reputed to have been reserved for the ship's visiting dignatories, Lord Wardens and the like.

Unfortunately they were all stored in "the caves" behind the Packet Yard and I rescued the two chairs damaged by mildew and took them to Arnside when we moved there mid 70's They turned out to be too imposing for the room available at ASC where I was a member, to get them renovated so I never did  manage it

To commemorate Terry's long membership of the Club seemed an ideal way to restore the Lord Warden chairs to the Lord Warden Bar and to have it done by the Lord Warden with Family, Club Members and Friends around seemed very fitting.

Best Wishes and Kindest Regards, John & Maisie Murray

8 March 2012  Jules & Vanessa Dussek -  Travels through Albania , Montenegro and Croatia

Last year Jules and Vanessa Dussek travelled Northwards along the beautiful and sometimes dramatic Adriatic taking in the rarely visited Albanian coast in their 11m Southerly 115 “Pluto”. There are almost no visiting yachts in Albania , which is a shame as it’s a splendid place to visit. Where else in Europe [the world] can you be the only visitor?  Montenegro has some beautiful scenery and Croatia must be one of the best cruising grounds, albeit it getting expensive

A group known as the Global Offshore Sailing Team (GOST) intend to set sail in a chartered 50’ yacht on 17th March 2012 at exactly the same time as the German Fleet left Brest.

They intend to sail the 800 nm route followed by the German Fleet. They have offered a place on the voyage to the CDA and the intention is to ‘heave to’ at the point of the attack in the Dover Straits to lay a wreath to the Aircrew who died. This German based group sail various historical journeys to give sailors a view of how original crews would have fared.

Unfortunately most members of the CDA are too old and they cannot find anyone to take up the offer. Neither has there been any take up from the Navy or Fleet Air Arm. Admiral Boyce has suggested that the CDA approach the RCPYC to see if any of our members would be interested in making the journey.

The downside to this is that the GOST is non profit making and each person would have to make payment towards the charter and their own flights. The cost could be up to £500.  I am informed that the CDA have £100 available to assist anyone interested in making the trip.

The CDA will supply the wreath for anyone making the journey as their representative.
This would be a great experience for any sailor but especially anyone interested in the history and the valour of the action in question especially given the historical proximity to our club. Although the expedition will be honouring the memory of brave men from both sides it is not military sponsored.

Lastly the Skipper (Jochen Werne) who will be leading the voyage will be a guest of The Lord Warden next week-end and has been invited as a guest representative of the CDA, on Sunday (12th), for anyone that has any questions.

In addition to the extract from the Cruising Association forum below, for the latest update on the Red Diesel problem, see this posting on the RYA site:

http://www.rya.org.uk/cruising/current-issues/Pages/RedDieselagameoftwohalves.aspx?utm_source=CruisingNews&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=feb12-cruising

This has recently been posted on the Cruising Association forum and, in as much as many of our members do visit Belgium, is highly relevant. Extract is as follows -

I am posting this for the benefit of non-ybw.com readers. A regular on that forum has been writing letters to various Government authorities in Belgium to ascertain the true position regarding fines on UK and other yachts that are found to have red diesel in their tanks. He has posted a letter today that confirms the Belgians' intention to fine those boats regardless of their possession of receipts showing duty paid. This is the text.

"I apologize for the somewhat belated reply to your last email but I wanted to make sure I had all pertinent information in my possession before coming back to you.

Although I understand the difficult position you and other British cruisers are in, I have to confirm that Belgium will indeed continue to fine pleasure vessels using dyed diesel.
